1. PARTICIPANT INFORMATION

Thank you for your interest in our study on self-perception throughout the menstrual cycle. Please read the following information carefully.

Purpose of the study

This study examines how individuals perceive themselves throughout their menstrual cycle and what factors might influence this self-perception.

Responsible researchers

The study is being conducted by the University of Bielefeld, Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science, Department of Psychology, by Kira Nelles, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Frank Neuner.

Study procedure - What can you expect from this study?

This study consists of two parts. Based on experience, the first part of the study, which you will complete in the following, takes approximately 15 minutes. The study is conducted online.

You will be asked to answer questions about your menstrual cycle and symptoms in the time period before menstruation, your general well-being, and your self-perception.
If you decide to participate in the second part of the study, you will receive a link to the second online questionnaire via email in 14 days. The second part of the study includes fewer questions and typically takes around 5 minutes to complete. Even if you have already completed the first part of the study, you can voluntarily decide whether you would like to participate in the second part as well.

We collect personal data, such as demographic information and cycle data, to be able to gain insightful study results. Optionally, we collect your contact information (email address) to send you a link to the second questionnaire. We provide information about the data protection-compliant processing of your personal data in the privacy policy below.

Benefits and risks

By participating, you help improve our understanding of premenstrual symptoms and cycle-related health, thereby advancing the knowledge in this field of study.

A compensation for your participation in this research project is not intended.

Some of the questions you will be asked as part of the study may cause mild discomfort or negative feelings (e.g. questions about symptoms, five questions about childhood experiences). You may withdraw from the study at any time or contact the researchers of this study listed in this participant information.

Voluntary participation

Participation in this study is voluntary. You may withdraw from this study at any time and for any reason without experiencing any disadvantages.

Data protection and data use

The data collected as part of this study will be treated confidentially. The handling of your personal data is explained in detail in the privacy policy below.

2. PRIVACY POLICY

The legal basis for processing the aforementioned personal data is the participants' consent in accordance to Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. a DS-GVO (German law).

As part of this study, your personal data will be collected and processed for the following purpose:

To send you an invitation for the second survey (contact information)

  • Email address

For the analysis of the data/processing of the study objective (research data),

  • Sociodemographic information (age and educational level)

  • Health data/menstrual cycle data (current day of the cycle, information on premenstrual symptoms, information on the use of hormonal contraceptives)

The personal data is collected solely for the purpose of the processing described here and will only be used for this project at Bielefeld University.
The data is collected within the online study via SoSci Survey. It will be downloaded from the platform for the purpose of data analysis. The first and second surveys can only be linked to each other via a participant code, which anonymizes the collected data and does not allow any identification of the participant. Email addresses are collected in a separate questionnaire and therefore cannot be linked to the participant’s responses.

Access to personal data is restricted to those involved in the research study. We do not transfer your personal data, which is processed by Bielefeld University for the aforementioned purposes, outside the European Economic Area and associated countries (no “transfer to third countries”).
Personal data processed for the invitation to the second survey (contact details) will be deleted after the invitation is sent.  You have the right to withdraw your consent to the storing of your contact information at any time. The lawfulness of the data processing carried out on the basis of your consent prior to its withdrawal remains unaffected (Art. 7 GDPR, German law). To exercise your right to withdraw consent, you may contact kira.nelles@uni-bielefeld.de at any time.

The research data is collected anonymously. The information you provide cannot be traced back to you. Because the data has been anonymized, it cannot be deleted or corrected.
