Dear participants,

Thank you for your interest in our study "The dark side of the workplace – an intercultural comparison" conducted by the Department of Work and Organisational Psychology at Justus Liebig University Giessen. We appreciate your willingness to contribute to this research.
Below, you will find all the important information regarding the study. Please read the text carefully. If you have any questions or need further information, feel free to contact us at any time.

Background and aim of the study

This study explores people’s experiences and behaviours in the workplace to gain a better understanding of how these are shaped. The goal of this intercultural study is to examine how individual personality traits influence attitudes towards work and, in turn, their work-related behaviours.
Whereas previous research has primarily focused on identifying aspects of work that enhance individual work performance, our study aims to look at both the positive and the "dark sides" of work life.
To provide a comprehensive perspective, the study is being conducted across several countries. This international approach addresses a limitation in existing research, which has largely been conducted in Western, educated, industrialised, rich, and democratic societies (e.g., the USA). As such, our findings aim to clarify whether previous conclusions can be generalised across cultural contexts. The results will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of cultural differences and similarities in workplace behaviour and attitudes.

Procedure for the study

To take part in the study, you must have been working for your current employer for at least 6 months, for at least 20 hours per week.
The study consists of an online survey, in which you will complete a series of questionnaires. The survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. You may pause and resume the questionnaire at any time if you need a break.
If you are interested in receiving the (preliminary) results of the study, you can leave your email address at the end of the survey. Your email address will be stored separately from your responses and deleted once the (preliminary) study results have been shared with you

Confidentiality

All data collected in this study will be handled with strict confidentiality. Your responses are collected anonymously, and no personal identifiers will be linked to your data. For research purposes, the data will be securely stored for a minimum of 10 years after the study concludes.

Here you can find the data protection information.

Voluntary nature of participation in the study

The participation in this study is voluntary. You can end your participation in this study at any time and without giving reasons, without this resulting in any disadvantages for you – even if you have already given your consent to participate. To do so, simply close the browser. Please note that the data collected up to the time of termination (or when you close the browser) will be saved.
