You are invited to take
part in a research study. Before you decide whether to participate, it is
important that you understand why the research is being carried out and what it
will involve. Please take a few minutes to read the following information carefully.
Please ask any and all questions you may have if there is anything that is not
clear or if you would like additional information before proceeding with the
survey. Take your time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.
The project has gone
through the relevant NTU research ethics procedures and has been given a
favourable ethics opinion by Nottingham Trent University’s Schools of Business,
Law and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee.
What is the research about?
This
survey aims to explore how individuals with a sexual attraction to children
perceive and experience sexual satisfaction and fulfilment. The goal is to
better understand how sexual satisfaction is achieved (if at all) and whether
it contributes positively to overall wellbeing. Additionally, the research examines relationships between sexual satisfaction and factors such as coping strategies, mental health, and self-esteem. We are also interested in exploring the concepts of sexual frustration and satisfaction and how they interact with sexual tolerance or thresholds towards certain behaviours or material.
What am I being asked to do?
You will be invited to complete an anonymous online
questionnaire, which should take approximately 20 minutes to
complete. Please note that due to the sensitive nature of the topic, some
questions may address personal and potentially distressing themes. The
questionnaire will include items about:
- Sexual
satisfaction and your use of sexual outlets.
- Your
mental health and wellbeing.
- Coping
strategies, self-perception, and internalised stigma.
- Sexual
frustration and tolerance thresholds.
If you have further questions or require additional
support, resources will be provided at the end of the survey.
Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you are
free to exit the survey at any time by closing your internet browser. You have
the right to not answer any questions you do not want to. If you wish to
withdraw your data during or after participation, please e-mail ellie.woodward@ntu.ac.uk
with your unique identifier. You have two weeks from today’s date to ask
for your data to be withdrawn. This means it will not be used by the
researcher and will be destroyed entirely.
Is the survey anonymous?
Yes, all responses are anonymous. No IP
addresses are collected, the survey is accessible via a Tor browser, and demographic
questions are optional. The responses you give will not be used
individually but will be pooled together to be analysed. The results and data
obtained from this survey will be used within a research project, and published
in psychology journals, books and/or research seminars. Due to the anonymity of
the data, you will not be identified. You will be asked to provide a replicable
unique identifier (e.g.,
the first two characters of your surname, the day of your date of birth, and
the final two characters of your town of birth) which will allow
you to withdraw your data if you wish to. Please be aware that if you withdraw
your data, your anonymity may be compromised for example, through email
identification.
Disclosures?
No identifiable information is collected, and you are not asked to provide any personally identifiable details. Simply responding to questions, including those related to sexual outlet use, will not result in a disclosure. Participation is entirely anonymous unless you choose to share identifiable information yourself. However, if you choose to identify yourself and disclose a criminal offence that has not been investigated, or a risk of harm to yourself or others, this may lead to a disclosure.
Importantly:
-
IP addresses are not collected.
-
No identifiable personal information is required.
-
You remain anonymous unless you choose to disclose identifiable details yourself.
What will happen with my data?
Questionnaire responses are saved to the software programme, SoSciSurvey, which
is password protected. The data will be downloaded and saved to a password-protected computer which only the researchers have access to. The data will
always be kept confidential even in the case of publication.
