Reading Questions Aloud

Under Compose Questionnaire, you can enable the following option in the settings:

“Display buttons to read questions and answers (text to speech)”

With this function, a play button that reads the text aloud is displayed for each text (questions, explanations, labels) on mouse-over. On touch displays (for example, on smartphones) the buttons are displayed permanently.

Speaking Rate

A speaker icon is displayed at the bottom of the questionnaire page. With this icon, the speaking rate can be changed or the speech output can be disabled.

Voice Quality

For the speech output, SoSci Survey uses a standard function of modern web browsers. The voice quality therefore varies from device to device. Should the voice quality not be satisfactory, add an “HTML code” element with the following content to a page of the questionnaire.

<script>
window.addEventListener("load", S2TextToSpeech.debugVoices);
</script>

Information about which voices and languages are available on the device or in the browser, and which of them SoSci Survey uses, is then displayed at the bottom of the page. Should the selection not be ideal, please contact the online support directly.
