Purpose of the Study:
Researchers at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health are conducting a study examining the effectiveness of Talking for Change (TFC), a secondary prevention program offering psychotherapy to individuals who are concerned about their risk of perpetrating child sexual abuse. This study is being done to assess the efficacy of the TFC group therapy model in reducing risks related to child sexual abuse, improving mental health of clients, and to learn more about why it works. We know from our previous evaluation of TFC that most people who participate experience a reduction in their risk of engaging in these behaviours. This study will compare these changes to changes that might occur as a result of mental health interventions in general, or as a result of the simple passage of time. This study will provide strong evidence as to whether the specific interventions used in TFC help people manage their feelings and distress, reduce their risks of offending, and also improve other factors like protective factors and general mental health.
As part of this study, we are looking for people who are not currently being treated with TFC to participate in an interview and complete an anonymous survey, which will help us understand the effectiveness of the therapy program we are currently evaluating in other participants. For this part of the study we are doing, you have the opportunity to participate in both an interview with one of our research team and complete an anonymous online survey. We will compensate you for your time.
