The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently transforming scientific practice across many disciplines. AI is not only being studied as a research subject but is increasingly being used as a tool in the research process—for example, for literature reviews, data analysis, or the production of scientific texts.
With this survey, we aim to gain a better understanding of how researchers and lecturers in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) use AI in their research, what attitudes they hold toward these technologies, and what opportunities and challenges they associate with them.
The study is conducted by the working group “AI in (Communication) Science” of the German Communication Association (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, DGPuK). Further information can be found on the working group's website.
When we refer to AI in the following, we mean applications that automatically perform tasks such as language processing, content generation, data analysis, or supporting decision-making.
The study is aimed at researchers and lecturers from all disciplines and career stages who work at research institutions in the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland).
The objectives of the survey are to:
- examine patterns of AI use and areas of application in everyday research practice,
- investigate attitudes, motivations, and trust regarding the use of AI,
- identify perceived risks and challenges, and
- shed light on institutional conditions and support needs.
Participation in the survey is voluntary and anonymous. No personal data will be collected, and it will not be possible to draw any conclusions about your identity. You may discontinue the survey at any time without providing a reason.
Completing the questionnaire will take approximately 10–15 minutes. As a small token of appreciation, all participants may voluntarily enter a prize draw at the end of the survey to win one of 20 gift vouchers worth €25 each for Wunschgutschein (a multi-brand gift voucher).
We would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to participate in the study. Every response helps us develop a more nuanced understanding of the use of AI in research.
