Welcome to the online study “Personality and Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence”!
This study is being conducted as part of an empirical project seminar (Empirisches Projektseminar) by Nadine Romanov and Lina Yan under the supervision of Sven Lesche at the Institute of Psychology, Heidelberg University. The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between personality and attitudes toward artificial intelligence.
Eligibility requirements:
To take part in this study, you must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum age: 18 years
- English proficiency: at least B1 level
What does participation involve?
Participation takes place online and takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
The study consists of two parts:
1. Demographic questions
• You will be asked to provide general background information such as age and gender.
2. Questionnaires
• You will complete questionnaires related to personality, your attitude toward artificial intelligence, AI literacy and your use of AI.
Benefits of participation
- By taking part, you make an important contribution to current psychological research on personality and attitude toward AI.
- If you wish, you may receive a brief summary of the main findings after the study has been completed (optional).
- Psychology students at Heidelberg University may receive 0.5 participant credit hours (VPN Stunden) for complete participation.
Risks and possible discomfort
- Participation in this study is generally considered low risk.
- Some questions may invite personal reflection on your attitudes, preferences, or experiences. In rare cases, reflecting on such topics may cause mild temporary discomfort. You can quit the survey at any time by closing the browser window.
- If you are currently feeling emotionally distressed, please decide for yourself whether participation is appropriate for you. If you feel uncomfortable during or after the study, you may withdraw at any time. Information on support services is provided on the final page.
Voluntary participation and withdrawal
Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may stop the survey at any time by closing your browser window. There will be no negative consequences if you choose not to participate or if you withdraw before completing the study.
Data protection and data processing
- Your data will be collected and processed in anonymized form.
- If you wish to receive a summary of the study results, you will be asked to provide your first and last name and email address.
- If you are a psychology student at Heidelberg University and wish to receive 0.5 participant credit hours (VPN Stunden), you will be asked to provide your first and last name and email address.
- Any personal information you may provide separately (for example, an email address for receiving study results or participant credits hours) will be stored separately from your study responses and deleted automatically as soon as it is no longer needed for its specific purpose.
- At no point will your survey responses be linked back to your identity. The data collected in this study will be used exclusively for scientific purposes.
- In accordance with the recommendations of the German Research Foundation (DFG), anonymized raw data will be securely stored for at least ten years. Fully anonymized data may be shared with the scientific community
via open-science platforms such as OSF.
In addition, aggregated research data may be prepared in such a way that rare combinations of characteristics are generalized to eliminate any remaining identification risk. Only anonymized or aggregated data will be used for analysis and possible publication.
- All personal data collected as part of this study will be treated with strict confidentiality. Responsibility for data processing lies with Nadine Romanov and Lina Yan, under the supervision of Sven Lesche, at Heidelberg University. Only authorized project staff will have access to the data. All persons involved in the project are bound by confidentiality obligations.
- This online study is hosted via SoSci Survey using SSL encryption, without storing cookies or IP addresses, on an ISO 27001-certified server in Germany.
- Encrypted security backups are created regularly and stored for up to twelve months. More information is available at:

Your rights as a participant
- Under applicable data protection law, you have the right to request information about your personal data, as well as the correction, restriction, or deletion of such data (Art. 15-21 GDPR).
- Please note, however, that because survey responses are collected in fully anonymized form, it is generally not possible to identify or delete individual response records after submission.
- Personal data provided separately for receiving study results or participant credit hours can be deleted upon request at any time, as long as they are still being stored for these purposes.
